A dramatic opera of passion and betrayal, “L’Incoronazione di Poppea” by Claudio Monteverdi, libretto by Francesco Busenello, tells the amoral story of the Roman Emperor Nero’s love affair with the scheming and seductive Poppea. Maria Ewing plays the manipulative and evil Poppea and Dennis Bailey is Nerone, her Emperor lover, with a supporting cast including Cynthia Clarey, Robert Lloyd, Elizabeth Gale, Dale Duesing. Features the Glyndebourne Chorus and the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Raymond Leppard who is also responsible for making this modern edition of the opera. Includes an introduction by Peter Hall and a translated printed program in English and Italian. Sung in Italian. Recorded for television as part of the Glyndebourne Festival series.
