A major cinematic event in India, and one of the most expensive films to ever come out of Bollywood, “Lagaan”, is about a group of impoverished villagers whose land is ravaged by drought. Fearing penury as a result of high taxes, Bhuvan (Indian star Aamir Khan) appeals the military governor for a repreive who challenges the locals to a game of cricket. Despite the fact that none can play the game, the farmers rally to save their homes. With its rousing musical numbers, “Lagaan” also boasts impressive cinematography and splendid performances. Nominated for Best Foreign Film, at the Academy Awards. Cast includes: Aamir Khan, Gracy Singh, Rachel Shelley, Paul Blackthorne, and Suhasini Mulay. In Hindi with English subtitles.
