The Art of Piano features some the greatest concert pianists of the Twentieth Century playing the greatest music ever written for piano. The documentary follows the development of the profession of concert pianists from the turn of the 19th Century, beginning with Franz Liszt up until the 1970s and compares the various interpretive styles of these great musicians. Excerpts of actual footage of performances by concert pianists are interspersed with interviews with contemporary pianists, and conductors or fellow performers. Essential viewing for anyone studying piano or lovers of piano music. Includes footage of Ignace Jan Paderewski, Josef Hofmann, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Benno Moisewitsch, Vladimir Horowitz, Gyorgy Cziffra, Myra Hess, Artur Rubenstein, Annie Fischer, Francis Plante, Alfred Cortot, Wilhelm Backhaus, Edwin Fischer, Emil Gilels, Sviatoslav Richter, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, Glenn Gould and Claudio Arrau.
