Australian Mike Rheinberger has made six attempts to reach the top of Mount Everest. His dream of conquering the mountain has become an obsession. On his seventh attempt, he and companion Mark Whetu finally reach the top and soon plunge into nightmare. After the elation of victory comes the realisation that it is too late to walk down to camp before nightfall. At 29,000 feet, they bivouac on a ridge, enduring temperatures of minus 25 degrees Celsius. The pair survives the night in what in called “the death zone” only to be awakened to a situation of extreme urgency. Mark Whetu is left to make a decision that will stay with him forever …
