This absorbing series is a survey of 2,000 years of Western civilisation illustrated by paintings, sculpture and other records from the past, compiled by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Historian Eugen Weber analyses the American Republic which was comprised of radicals and conservatives and founded on the premises of “Universal Freedoms” for its inhabitants.
