An ordinary Lego mini-figure, mistakenly thought to be the extraordinary MasterBuilder, is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil Lego tyrant from gluing the universe together.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s 2014 stop-motion animation blockbuster had audience declaring “Everything is awesome!” when it took the world by storm in 2014. Finally bringing the entire, beloved LEGO universe together in a family-friendly romp, it both delighted new viewers and rekindled nostalgia in lovers of the world-famous brick toys. Featuring an all-star cast, including Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman, Alison Brie, Liam Neeson, and Morgan Freeman, it arrived “at a time when feature animation was looking and feeling mighty anemic…The LEGO Movie shows ‘em how it’s done”, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

It has since spawned a spin-off, The Lego Batman Movie (2017) and a direct sequel, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019). In our new exhibition, The Story of the Moving Image, we take an in-depth look at character design by Animal Logic.
