Famous Scotsmen who have been responsible for many valuable contributions to the machine age include: Macadam, known for “macadamised” roads; Watt, who developed the steam engine; Murdoch, who developed gas-lighting; Masmyth, designer of the steam hammer; Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone; Telford, engineer responsible for the building of the Caledonian canal; and Simpson, who developed chloroform for use as an anaesthetic.
