This motion-capture artwork projects a synthetic self, but it all started with simple drawings that you can see below. Sketches are the first step in Universal Everything’s creative process, used to explore questions like ‘What would we look like as robots?’ and ‘Where is the humanity in the mechanical?’

You could become one of 47,000 possible robot reflections in Future You. Starting as a primitive form, your reflection adapts to your movements and becomes more complex through its life cycle. Every interaction is unique and the more you move, the more animated your android avatar becomes.

Trained on the movements of real people, Future You uses a body-tracking sensor and special software to detect and interpret your movements. The data is processed through a videogame engine, built in Unity, which randomly assigns different material qualities, colours and textures to create a personalised character for you.
