This video features in a responsive display in the museum that presents the moments, stories and memes capturing the zeitgeist by going viral on the internet.
From TikToks of in-game successes (and failures) to live Twitch streams, social media and videogames are perfectly matched. Modern consoles often have in-built features that let users easily record their play to share online, but this video isn’t that. It looks like leaked footage of Grand Theft Auto 6’s new graphics, but it’s a real-world video mimicking the series’ old-school movements, gestures and streetscapes. It’s like digital cosplay and reflects a larger trend of social users recreating game worlds in real life – like giving strangers side quests as if in GTA (embedded below) – which highlights the blurring of online and offline life. It’s been viewed over 40m times, but there are many versions out there. This TikTok from user @bryteosky features dialogue, sound effects, cinematic cut scenes, graphic overlays and an impressively large cast to further anchor reality to the game.
A TikTok from user sidequestz where he plays the role of a non-playable character (NPC), using the game's dialogue.
