International celebrities like Oscar winners Juliette Binoche and Marion Cotillard have taken to social media to express their solidarity with Iranian protestors, following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini while in the custody of Iran’s morality police for violating the nation’s dress code. The videos, which show women symbolically cutting off their hair, are compiled on Instagram account soutienfemmesiran (support women in Iran), using the hashtag #hairforfreedom.
Social media’s reach allows online communities to collectively condemn actions across the world – supporters may not be able to be there physically, but social gives them a voice – tethering protestors on the ground with human rights advocates and activists, resulting in support, as the video below shows, that can result in causes being advanced on traditional media channels.
This video demonstrates how movements that spread on social media feedback into mainstream media, with India Today journalist Geeta Mohan performing the trend in a live broadcast.
