TikTok user gutknot challenges misogynistic assumptions that women can’t operate farm machinery. A response to her video dancing to country song ‘International Harvester’ suggested she “probably [didn’t] know how to start a tractor”. Well, she proved him wrong and gained over 3.4m views in four days. Part of the popularity of the video is the juxtaposition of the goth aesthetic with an agricultural setting usually associated with conservatism, but it also relates to the broader y’allternative hashtag. A play on ‘yall and alternative, the movement provides an online space for leftist, LGBTQIA+ and goth folk living in rural areas.
