After the failed assassination of her husband Peter, Catherine takes a different tack in her bid for power. Her costumes are changing, too: designer Sharon Long implements more embellishments and metallics, bringing the opulence of Peter’s season one costumes to Catherine’s lighter colour palette, showing that she’s not blending into the Russian court, she’s making it her own. The old-fashioned silhouette of Catherine’s glittering coronation gown are mocked by the older courtiers – but the younger women are awed. “Would you like to be more like me – and perhaps have a life different from your mothers’?” Catherine asks. They nod enthusiastically. She is playing the long game.
