Catherine’s character trajectory in season one is illustrated by the colour of her costumes. Unlike Catherine, Peter’s costuming tends to stick to the jewel tones and muted, dark colours of the Russian court, but that doesn’t mean his outfits lack character. While his costume’s colour scheme indicates he’s accustomed to life in the Russian court, his erratic, opulent personality is expressed through rich textures and patterns instead. Costume designer Emma Fryer looked to a wide array of sources to find the eclectic mix of fabrics, patterns and textures we see in Peter’s wardrobe, from decadent furs and brocade to furnishing fabrics.
