By the first season finale of The Great, Catherine has given up the innocent pastel tones of her youth and demur colours that helped her blend in at court. By contrast, the bright magenta dress she wears for her birthday immediately stands out; even in long and crowd shots, Catherine’s vivid birthday dress is immediately visible. Costume designer Emma Fryer described the shade as an expression of Catherine’s optimism and determination: “Using a colour like that gives you a greater sense of who this person can become.” Catherine’s coming into her power, and she wants everyone to know it.
