When she was elected to US Congress, representative Ilhan Omar successfully fought for her right to wear a hijab in the House chamber of the Capitol. Previously, headwear was banned in the House, but Omar, the first Muslim woman in US congress alongside Rep. Rashida Tlaib, successfully fought for a religious exemption: “No one puts a scarf on my head but me. It’s my choice—one protected by the first amendment,” she wrote on Twitter to announce the change.
