The Raymond Penington Home Movie Collection is a collection of 16mm colour and black-and-white films made between 1938 and 1965. Dr. Raymond Penington (born 1903) was a medical doctor from Melbourne, Victoria. He and his wife Edith lived in Papua New Guinea in the late 1920s before returning to Melbourne in 1931 and settling in Canterbury. They had three children, Margaret, Vivienne and Jocelyn. His home movies focus on family life in Melbourne and holidays in regional Victoria.

Travelling between Port Campbell in Victoria and South Australia’s Port McDonnell, this film follows the Penington family’s trip along the West Victorian coastline.

Included are the Port Campbell cliffs, Great Ocean Road’s ‘The Blow Hole’, ‘Loch Ard Gorge’ and ‘London Bridge’ (now known as the London Arch and the Twelve Apostles).

Other places visited include Warrnambool, Port Fairy, Portland, Mt Gambier, Port McDonnell (SA) and Cape Nelson.

The film shows a number of vehicles from the 1950s and fashion from the time; however, the majority of the film is scenery.

Buildings of interest include the Fletcher Jones Plus 8 building and Gardens in Warrnambool, ‘Hotel Richmond, The original home of the Henty’s’ and Custom House, Port McDonnell.

The film finishes with a semi-fade to black shot of the back of the Penington family caravan and title card ‘The End’.
