Treaty – Yothu Yindi

Film
A still image from Treaty – Yothu Yindi

Montage is a common tool used in many music videos, yet in the case of Yothu Yindi’s song Treaty (1991) it helped communicate the musicians disdain for “all those talking politicians” as footage of then Prime Minister Bob Hawke at the presentation of the Barunga Statement intersected with the powerful lyrics. The spliced images became a political statement, with director Stephen Johnson making sure the micro-documentary was put it in a form where audiences who didn’t watch the news would see it.
