Briggs and Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu’s “The Children Came Back” was released ahead of NAIDOC week in 2015. It speaks directly to Australia’s history of oppressive policies towards First Peoples, such as the forced removal of children from their families and assimilation. It’s an adaptation of “Took the Children Away” (1990) by Archie Roach and features varied traditional instrumentation like yidaki from North East Arnhem Land, vocals from the Tiwi Islands and clap sticks.
