Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center in Cambodia is dedicated to the collection, digitisation and preservation of media lost during the Khmer Rouge reign, including newsreels, features, records, documentaries and photos. The 1960s and early 70s were a golden age for Cambodian cinema. The thriving film industry produced over 300 films and cinemas dotted the country alongside a vibrant music scene and traditional ballet. When the Khmer Rouge took over in 1975, artists were targeted and a key aspect of Cambodia’s cultural heritage was dismantled. Safeguarding this material is essential for reconstructing Cambodia’s cultural memory, allowing for new interpretations of historical footage and giving agency back to the community.
An institutional partnership between ACMI, Bophana and Cambodian Living Arts is supported by the Australian Government through the Australia-ASEAN Council of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
