Film
Photograph by Egmont Contreras, ACMI.

The evolution of film to portable, tape-based cameras and the production and distribution of magnetic media like video continued the democratisation of the moving image. One sector that readily adopted magnetic media was education, with training and educational videos disseminated on the format. We now have a range of educational videos in our collection and the VHS camera featured here was used to shoot classes on filmmaking when ACMI was part of Cinemedia in the late 1990s. Rapid deterioration of video and the obsolescence of the equipment needed for playback pose critical preservation issues – we’re doing everything we can to save them.
