This film is a Cinesound Review, a news broadcast that covered significant social, cultural and political events in Australia. The newsreel shows the final leg of the 1970 Royal Tour with Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and Princess Anne, for the bicentenary celebrations of the arrival of Captain James Cook in Australia in 1770.
The film shows the royal family arriving in Brisbane, Queensland, on the Royal Yacht Britannia, where they are greeted by crowds of people in hundreds of boats on the river. It shows the family attending various events, including a welcome at Parliament House, theatre shows and a children’s parade at Lang Park, or Brisbane Stadium.
Princess Anne visits a sheep station at Cunnamulla, Queensland, while Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip visit the mines at Mount Isa, Queensland.
The film shows bicentenary celebrations in Cooktown, Queensland, and Botany Bay, New South Wales. These celebrations include a speech by the Queen and re-enactments of Captain James Cook’s arrival in Australia in 1770, with interactions with Aboriginal Australian people.
The film continues with fireworks over Sydney Harbour; an ANZAC Day march in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory; Prince Philip playing polo with a local team; and the opening of the international terminal at Sydney Airport, from which the royal family departs.
