The Charles Hayes Home Movie Collection is a collection of home movies originally made on 8mm and 9.5mm film between the 1940s and 1970s by Charles Edward Hayes (1914–1993). The resulting footage shows us the life of a family living in Heathmont in Melbourne’s south east with their many pets and farm animals, their family holidays and gatherings, their suburb and their cars as well as scenes from Melbourne at the time.
This is a composite film of different segments – a family reunion at Halls Gap in 1973 where we see typical barbeques of the era – a small round three legged hotplate and a ‘trough’ style both stacked with 1970’s barbeque fare – lots of lamb chops. We also see the fashions of the 1970’s in the velvets, flares, knee high socks and long hair. ‘Sandown Park with Jack Brabham’ introduces a segment of vintage racing cars and favourite car driver of the day, Jack Brabham signing autographs and smiling at the camera.
The film also includes some Moomba parade floats and marching girls, some city scenes of Melbourne and the Yarra Heliport and Ansett-ANA helicopter and finishes with some up close footage on the set of ‘World of Sport’, a very popular television sports show of the era featuring Lou Richards, Jack Dyer and Ron Casey among others.
Originally made using Standard 8mm film.
