While he saw it as his duty to defend his country against communism, it wasn’t until Paul Rayment went to Vietnam that he realised how lucky Australia really was. However, on his return, Rayment became estranged from his community and friends, and it took a while to rebuild those ties and his connection to the country he had earlier set out to defend.
