“That day the Americans gave us a fruit cake was a very rare day indeed, as breaks were not on the cards”. A near-miss while relaxing in Tambu Bay, New Guinea right near the end of the war was a turning point in more ways than one. The senselessness of war drove Allen to find his own happiness and sense of meaning when he returned to civilian life.
