In 1941, the Australian Women’s Army Services was formed and Joan chose to join the AWAS to fight for Australia. Her dad was in the army as was missing in action. Joan was transferred to work on Salt, the official army publication. It was called Salt because salt was so essential to life. Joan’s story is about her service, her marriage and her work with Salt.
