In 1996 Powell became the first female to represent The Nationals in the Victorian Government when she was elected as the Member for the North Eastern Province in the Legislative Council. Powell’s political career began as a Councillor for the Shire of Shepparton. Powell has served as Shepparton Shire President, was appointed a commissioner with the Shire of Campaspe in 1994 and in 2002 Powell was elected as the State Member for Shepparton District. Powell is currently the Shadow Minister for Local Government and the Shadow Minister for Aboriginal Affairs.
