A respectable middle-class husband, complacently happy in his marriage, discovers that is wife has been having an affair with another man. He confronts the lover and kills him in an attempt to save his marriage. This film is the first of a trilogy on adultery (all starring Chabrol’s then wife, Stephane Audran) including ‘La Rupture/The Breakup’ (1970) and ‘Juste avant la Nuit/Just before Nightfall’ (1971).
