Fabrice returns to Parma to live with his aunt, Duchess Sanseverina. He is unaware of her feelings for him and looks for amourous adventures all over town. A jealous man challenges him to a duel and Fabrice kills him. After his arrest and trial, Fabrice is condemned to 12 years imprisonment and taken to the Farnese tower. There, he seduces Clelia, the daughter of the prison governor.
