An impoverished 40 year old American composer lives on the Left Bank in Paris. Hearing that he has inherited a fortune, he borrows money to hold a party, only to learn that the money has gone to a cousin. The ensuing crisis leads him by subtle degrees into becoming a tramp, begging outside cafes.
