[The Royal Tour of Australia]

Australia, 1954

Film
[The Royal Tour of Australia] thumbnail image.

This film is a documentary of the visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Australia in 1954. A highlight is an event at the MCG in Melbourne in which 17,000 children participated. At one point, the excited children break rank and surround the royals jeep to get a closer view so that Prince Philip starts to shoo them out of the way of the vehicle.

Another Prince Philip moment is at the Davis Cup tennis tournament in Melbourne where he is seen speaking at length to the coach and the players who assume they should pass by quickly.

Selected highlights list:

Note - 08/09/2022 Ann Jones (née Vernon) wrote to ACMI to say she was 10 years old and was from West Coburg Primary School. When the word ‘Welcome’ was formed she was at the top corner of the ‘C’. I remember Her Majesty driving past us and waving.
