Kenneth Carruthers Rankine (1890 - 1968) was a keen amateur cinematographer and filmmaker. This collection of his home movies has been donated to ACMI by Kenneth’s granddaughter. The collection represents a wonderful slice of life in Australia; with contents including scenes of everyday life, major family occasions, holidays around Victoria and views of Melbourne.

This film, ‘The Sequel’, shows various snapshots of his travels almost as if these scenes are the offcuts of other reels. It is more difficult to locate his footage as Kenneth has not included his usual signs and location titles.

Selected highlights list:

00:00:06:00 title ‘The Sequel’ followed by scenes of waterways, a building with razorwire brick fence, houses, sloping green landscapes and various sea vessels back on the water - ferries, larger and smaller boats and sailing boats all in quick succession.

00:02:08:00 a train carrying coal, then more waterways including a road causeway across the water, a large church and a large hill and more water scenes.

00:02:38:00 prosperous looking farmland, market gardens and houses on a hillside, trees and hills and the sea.

00:03:20:00 old, crumbling buildings on a large scale; a newer house and a woman chopping wood followed by scenes of houses. a town street and farmland near a river and hills.

00:04:30:00 ‘Blue Horizon’ title begins a sequence of houses and a town along a river and the sea, Bettye Rankine and Bob Wootton walking on the sand.

00:05:35:00 the first of a few upside-down frames appear - a church and a town. These are followed by scenes of a large and possibly industrial country town near the sea.

00:07:17:00 shot of a steam train and an engine reversing into a crowded station.
