David Bowie. Madonna. ABBA. Kylie Minogue. If you were a music act in the 1970s, there was one show you had to be on to solidify your status and that was Countdown. Hosted by Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum, the ABC program became an institution during its 13-year run. It was the shining jewel in the crown of Australian TV, which moved to exciting new places in the 70s with the arrival of colour. Channel 10 had the saucy Number 96, comedy found new footing with The Aunty Jack Show and the Special Broadcast Service (SBS) was officially launched in 1979 with the aim of telling multicultural Australian stories.
