Just desserts

Australia, 1993

Film

This wonderfully sensuous short presents the rites of puberty as a menu of Italian favourites: a young girls first period occurs when she is stomping the grapes; gnocchi is forever to remind her of first having sex with a boy; burnt polenta is the taste of lesbian longing. A lovely remembrance of an Italo-Australian adolescence.
