Abigail Masham (Emma Stone) is down on her luck. Her wealthy family has made bad investments, and when we first meet her in The Favourite (2018), she’s pleading (politely) for a job in Queen Anne’s palace. It’s not the most flattering start – she’s covered in mud after being kicked from a carriage – but she’s soon promoted to lady-in-waiting and trades her grubby attire for a sleek black dress. As she climbs up the court, more and more white is added to her outfit, demonstrated by the trim on this costume. By the end of the film she’s draped in a completely over-the-top white dress that establishes her influence and shows how far she’s come.
