A love triangle between a writer, his childhood crush and her new partner sets up a beguiling psychological drama.
Deliveryman Jongsu (Yoo Ah-in) is out on a job when he runs into Haemi (Jeon Jong-seo), a girl who once lived in his neighbourhood. She asks if he’d mind looking after her cat while she’s away on a trip to Africa. On her return, she introduces Jongsu to an enigmatic young man named Ben (Steven Yeun), who she met during her trip.
Curator's Note
Based on Haruki Murakami's short story Barn Burning, from his short story collection The Elephant Vanishes (1993), Lee Chang-Dong's highly acclaimed feature film is another example of a short story inspiring a much larger, expanded narrative. The sense of mystery at the heart of the short story is what inspired Lee Chang-Dong to adapt it to the screen, and it's a mystery that has been built on and cultivated in the process.
Burning premiered at the 71st Cannes Film Festival where it competed for the Palme d'Or and won the FIPRESCI award.

Read the book beforehand
Murakami's dizzying short story collection displays the author's genius for uncovering the surreal in the everyday, the extraordinary within the ordinary.
