Late in life, Cass is drawn to his long-forsaken childhood home of Bundaberg, where he finds himself on a spiritual search for redemption.

Back in Bundaberg, Cass rediscovers not only his childhood home, but the memories and traumas he left behind. He opens his heart to a spiritual exploration amongst the community, eventually finding himself being born again by Baptist Christians, on a journey that culminates in experimental therapy from new age Buddhists.

Curator's Note

This debut feature by Jaydon Martin, executive produced by filmmaker Amiel Courtin-Wilson (Bastardy, Hail), deftly blurs the line between fiction and documentary.

Flathead delves into the lives of Bundaberg residents through gorgeous monochrome cinematography, seamlessly blending documentary realism with poetic introspection. The film focuses on Cass Cumerford, a resilient widower exploring spirituality amidst health struggles, and Andrew Wong, grappling with identity and loss after his father’s passing.

The film navigates these themes with grace, from Cass’ candid reflections to Andrew’s quest for meaning through Buddhism. The narrative defies traditional structure, opting for atmospheric depth over linear storytelling to create a profound, visually stunning portrait of the search for understanding and the forces that connect us to each other.

Flathead had its international premiere at International Film Festival Rotterdam to critical acclaim, signaling Jaydon Martin as a new voice to watch.
