Mohammad Rasoulof journeys through Iran to find the different ways citizens navigate censorship.
Officially, many things are not permitted, yet with Persian ingenuity, almost everything is possible.
Heightened censorship in Iran seems to have done little to quell citizens' appetite for what's forbidden. From underground DVD businesses to illegal satellite dish installers, clandestine avenues to access media have emerged. And with the internet age upon us, Iranian websites flouting censorship emerge faster than the government can take them down.
Curator's Note
In a country where news, TV and cinema are heavily policed by the government, the internet age makes hard work of controlling information flow.
Featuring interviews with unidentified rule-breakers, and directed by a rule-breaker himself, Mohammad Rasoulof's 2008 documentary is a bold and brave examination of the very censorship that would become a force within his films, career and life.
