Martin Scorsese takes us on a personal journey through the films of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.

Join Martin Scorsese as he takes audiences on a very personal journey through the life and careers of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger who have created some of great classics of the British golden age including The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus and the adored A Matter of Life and Death.

Brought to life with a treasure trove of rare archival material from the personal collections of Powell, Pressburger and Scorsese, their collective story is revealed through diaries, audio recordings, home movies, personal snapshots and of course the films themselves.

Curator's Note

Forget what you know about biographical documentaries.

David Hinton's loving portrait of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger is a fitting and overdue tribute to the filmmakers and their lasting contribution to British and international cinema. However, the journey that narrator Martin Scorsese leads us on is as much about how the duo has influenced his own filmmaking career – and along the way, we're given the keys to unlock some of the secrets in his own films including Taxi Driver and Raging Bull.

The result is almost two films, two stories and two journeys braided together, and a reminder of how the films of Powell and Pressburger are still influencing films today.
