Fueled by a deep respect for the star, Liza Minnelli receives an endearing portrait in Bruce David Klein's biographical doco.
She has won an Academy Award for Cabaret, an Emmy for Liza with a Z and multiple Tony Awards – it's time to celebrate the life and career of Liza Minnelli.
Taking the passing of her mother Judy Garland as a starting point, Bruce David Klein's adoring film instead devotes itself to all of the other influences on her career – Kay Thompson, Fred Ebb, Charles Aznavour, Halston, and Bob Fosse –and their vital role in shaping the icon.
Curator's Note
While villages have raised children for eons, it takes an extraordinary village to create a star.
Debunking superficial assumptions that Liza Minnelli is the product of her mother's own charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent, Bruce David Klein builds a portrait of Minnelli using the other deeply influential forces in her life as building blocks. The result is a film that avoids cliché, caricature and tabloid fodder en route to building a wealth of understanding around the star.
Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.
– Reece Goodwin, Curator (Film & TV)
A gorgeous portrait of a legendary showbiz survivor, warmly celebratory but also unquestionably authentic
