In 1970s England, an ageing Lee Miller sits with a young man. She reflects on her bohemian summers in the south of France surrounded by the likes of Man Ray, Picasso and Vogue editor Solange D'Ayen, and on the love affair with Roland Penrose (Alexander Skarsgård) that stole her away to London. However, it is her career as a photojournalist on the frontline after war broke out across Europe that warrants the deepest, most uncomfortable reflection of all.
Curator's Note
From Mare of Easttown onwards Kate Winslet has been stepping into the role of Producer quite frequently, so it is of little surprise that she should take that role with Lee – a dream role for the actor. Kate Winslet actively sought out the role of Lee Miller and became a huge driving force in the film being made.
Alexander Skarsgård, Marion Cotillard, Andrea Riseborough, Josh O'Connor and a surprising Andy Samberg round out a stellar cast under the directorial eye of Winslet's cinematographer on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Ellen Kuras. Winslet is undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with behind the scenes, befitting the trailblazer she plays on screen.
Lee premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
