A charismatic Vicky Krieps stars in Marie Kreutzer's revisionist biopic reimagining the life of Austria's defiant Empress Elisabeth.
[A] bold, visually striking and ingeniously anachronistic portrait of an empress in complicated rebellion.
It's 1877 and Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Phantom Thread's Vicky Krieps) is renowned for her beauty and looked to for inspiring the hottest fashion trends of the day. Her 40th birthday is approaching and feeling under the growing scrutiny of gossipmongers, Elisabeth's behavior begins to shift. Unimpressed with a future of strictly ceremonial duties laid out before her, the Empress rebels.
Curator's Note
Starring a captivating Vicky Krieps – who came up with the idea for the film and took on a producer role – Corsage takes creative license with the story of the real-life Austrian empress. Thoroughly modern interventions weave their way through the fictionalised biopic, crafting a film that is more aligned to Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette (2006) than most other biographical (or quasi-biographical) films of its ilk.
Corsage premiered at the 75th Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section where Vicky Krieps received the award for best performance.
