A service robot shipwrecked on a deserted island tries to find her place in a new land.
After a hectic storm, service robot ROZZUM unit 7134, or Roz for short, becomes shipwrecked on an uninhabited island. Trying to find her place in the island's harsh surrounds, Roz builds relationships with the wild animals on the island, however it's only when she begins caring for an orphaned gosling that Roz truly finds her stride.
Curator's Note
Drawing visual inspiration from Hayao Miyazaki's Laputa: Castle in the Sky, The Wild Robot's Roz is a humanoid robot on a journey to find her place in the wild. However, the wild doesn't have a need for a service robot – it needs a robot with compassion and empathy.
Roz has heart, and by harnessing an efficient visual cue system and articulate tones of voice by Academy Award-winning Lupita Nyong'o, the filmmakers are able to convey her feelings to the audience.
The Wild Robot premiered at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival.
