Ian Burns: In the Telling

Exhibition

This event has ended and tickets are no longer available.

When

24 Jul 2012 – 20 Jan 2013

A curious and playful exhibition that used sculpture and live video to interrogate the screen image, its construction, and its representation of truth.

Ian Burns emphasised the presence of technology in this work by placing it on display alongside the projected image. The viewer saw the image on screen and then examined the work to discover how the scene was contrived. Burns incorporated new media in to his work as if it were paint or clay, using the technology unexpectedly, in ways that challenged and highlighted the possibilities and limitations of the technology itself.

New York based Australian artist Ian Burns brought his inventive sensibility to bear in his 'meta-cinematic' exhibition, In the Telling.

Presenting a network of close-circuit kinetic sculptures that worked together to create live video footage inside the gallery, the exhibition invited audiences to suspend their disbelief and behold a moment of cinematic cliché and excess.

Ian Burns: In the Telling  is an ACMI Commission.

Commissions

Our commissions support the creation of new works by providing artists with the time and resources to nurture and develop ideas, to pursue cross-disciplinary collaborations and to work at a scale that would not otherwise be possible.
