A God Incarnate. A City Doomed.

It's a peaceful day in Tokyo... until a gilled monster emerges from the deep and begins tearing through the city, leaving nothing but destruction in its wake.

As the government scrambles to save the citizens, a rag-tag team of volunteers cuts through a web of red tape to uncover the monster's weakness and its mysterious ties to a foreign superpower. But time is not on their side, and the greatest catastrophe to ever befall the world is about to evolve right before their very eyes.

Curator notes

Shin Godzilla reinvents the king of monsters as a contemporary analogy for national disaster and the horror of bureaucratic inaction. Parallels between the film and real life disasters are clear; scenes of Tokyo's destruction echo footage from the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake, not only making the carnage devastating within the film's narrative but among Japanese audiences.

The monster design is also outstanding, portraying different and equally disturbing stages of Godzilla’s life cycle and introducing an element of body horror to the franchise.

... an intelligent and entertaining film rich with lore and subtext.
