Ken Loach zeroes in on one of the defining issues of our time – the gig economy's crushing impact on the working class.
Ricky (Kris Hitchen) and his family have been fighting an uphill battle against debt since the 2008 financial crash. An opportunity to wrestle back some financial independence appears with a shiny new van and the chance to run a franchise as a self-employed delivery driver. It's hard work, and his wife Abby's (Debbie Honeywood ) job as a carer is no easier. The family unit is strong but when both are pulled in different directions everything comes to a breaking point.
Curator's Note
Ken Loach follows up his Palme d'Or-winning I, Daniel Blake with a film brimming with as much compassion and emotional potency as the critically lauded predecessor. While the earlier film skewers the timeless issue of people being hindered by barriers that prevent them from receiving the welfare they're entitled to, Sorry We Missed You hones in on a social issue that is both timely and defining of our time: the gig economy and the erosion of workers' rights on the UK's working class. The film is at once an emotional phantom ride and an unforgettable call to action that cannot be ignored.
Sorry We Missed You premiered at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival where it screened in competition.
– Reece Goodwin, Curator (Film & TV)
What makes it one of Loach's best isn't just its rage (which is plentiful) but its compassion (which is overwhelming).
