Björk's ‘Army of Me’ rides shotgun with the 90s cult film starring Lori Petty.
After a comet disrupts the rain cycle of Earth, the planet has become a desolate, barren desert by the year 2033. With resources scarce, a Machiavellian corporation has taken control of the water supply. Unwilling to cower under to their tyrannical rule, an outlaw from the Australian outback co-opts a tank and rises up.
Curator's note
To truly understand Tank Girl you have to experience the Tank Girl Motion Picture Soundtrack. In 1995, film soundtracks were an essential part of the teen movie landscape, with albums like Empire Records and Tank Girl challenging their films in popularity.
Curated by Courtney Love during the height of her band Hole’s success with their breakthrough album Live Through This, the soundtrack captures the rebellious spirit of the era. While it features standout tracks from Hole, L7 and Veruca Salt, it’s Björk’s powerful anthem, ‘Army of Me’, that truly steals the show.
Although Tank Girl received mixed reviews upon release, with some feeling it didn’t quite capture the essence of Alan Martin and Jamie Hewlett’s original comic book (Hewlett would later co-create Gorillaz with Damon Albarn), it has since earned a dedicated cult following. Tank Girl now stands as a beloved classic, offering a great cast, a fun ride and, yes, a killer soundtrack.
Tank Girl stars Lori Petty, Malcolm McDowell, Ice T, Iggy Pop and a post-Brides-of-Christ-pre-Mulholland-Drive Naomi Watts.
