Björk’s ‘The Comet Song’ sets the stage for this stunning Nordic animation with a hint of apocalyptic tension.

One day Moomintroll notices that something strange has happened in Moomin Valley – everything is grey: not just the sky and the river, but the trees, the ground, the Moominhouse, too! According to Muskrat, this is just what happens before the end of the world.

Moomintroll and his friends set out on a perilous journey to find answers.

Curator's note

Apocalyptic obsessions: check.

Maria Lindberg's 2010 film lovingly reimagines the animated Moomin series (1977–82), itself inspired by Tove Jansson’s cherished books. Recrafted from episodes of the original series, the film preserves the exquisite texture of stop-motion animation, while introducing a fresh narrative perspective.

The film features an exceptional voice cast, including Max von Sydow (The Exorcist), Stellan Skarsgård (Dune), Alexander Skarsgård (The Northman) and Mads Mikkelsen (The Hunt). As a Moomin fan, Björk’s contribution of ‘The Comet Song’ beautifully frames the film, offering a comforting, familiar presence that echoes the warmth and wonder of a classic storyteller.
