Our connection to the natural world is examined on a micro and macro level in Björk's groundbreaking 2011 art project.
After two albums delving into human biology and anthropology, Björk turned her gaze outward, exploring the complex relationship between humanity and nature through her visionary eighth studio album, Biophilia (2011).
Rooted in the concept of 'biophilia' – the innate human desire to connect with other living systems – this multi-disciplinary project features custom-built instruments and an innovative educational app used in classrooms around the globe. Premiered at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival, Björk: Biophilia Live invites audiences to experience this extraordinary fusion of music, science and visual art.
The film opens with mesmerising images of growing crystals, shifting tectonic plates and glowing bacteria, narrated by Sir David Attenborough, who eloquently captures our profound connection to the natural world. Filmed over one night at London’s Alexandra Palace with 16 cameras, Björk: Biophilia Live offers a breathtaking, up-close view of Björk’s performance. Directors Peter Strickland and Nick Fenton place you at the very heart of this unique event, from the serene rise of the moon to a raucous, riotous finale.
