Join us for a special screening of the Berlin Film Festival award-winning short documentary followed by an extended Q&A with creators Derik Lynch and Matthew Thorne.
Leaving the oppression of white city life in Adelaide, Yankunytjatjara man Derik Lynch embarks on a road trip back to Country for spiritual healing, as memories from his childhood return. Back home in his remote Anangu Community (Aputula) he performs a traditional form of storytelling using the visual, verbal and physical. It is how Anangu Tjukurpa (stories connected to country, dreaming, myth and lore) have been passed down for over 60,000 years from generation to generation.
Marungka tjalatjunu (Dipped in Black) made history in 2023 when it became the first ever film to win the Silver Bear Jury Prize (Short Film) and the Teddy Award for best queer short film at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival. Despite being only 24 mins in duration, it was also the winner of the Documentary Australia Award at the Sydney Film Festival 2023 which included feature docs in competition.
Following the screening, join the film's featured subject and co-director Derik Lynch and producer and co-director, Matthew Thorne for an in-depth Q&A moderated by ACMI Curator Amanda Haskard.
