Deaf Stories told through Auslan are unlike anything you've ever experienced. This true visual and living language is brought to life through the medium of film like no other.

Led by two extraordinary Deaf storytellers, you'll witness a screening showcasing the art of Deaf storytelling in Auslan, captured through the lens of film.

Following the screening, dive into a masterclass session where you'll engage in an interactive exploration of Deaf storytelling.

Discover the intricacies of capturing Deaf narratives on film and gain insight into the distinctive aspects of filmmaking when visual communication takes centre stage.

Presenters

Ramas McRae

Ramas McRae is a Deaf storyteller, filmmaker and director, and a PhD candidate at Deakin University, Melbourne. Recent film work includes Dry Fire (2021) and Chaos II (2023).

Ramas’ current research explores mental health issues within the d/Deaf and hard of hearing population. He holds qualifications in science, interpreting and education. He is also a part time lecturer and tutor and a freelance consultant, specialising in interpreting, translating and training in Deaf awareness and Deaf culture as well as Deaf arts, particularly film.

As an avid storyteller, he has fluency in nine languages including seven sign languages and is certified as an International Sign interpreter, Auslan interpreter and translator. His contributions to the Deaf Community include leadership positions within Deaf advocacy, Deaf basketball and Deaf arts and as a mentor.

Melissa Anderson

Melissa Anderson is an active member in the Deaf community and has a wealth of life experiences in various fields such as sports, teaching Auslan, filming, researching, working with families of Deaf children (Early Intervention) and theatre acting in Deaf Kitchen.

She has also presented for ABC News Auslan Bulletin and is the President of Deaf Women Victoria. Melissa holds a Master of Education degree from La Trobe University.
